Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
