The entrepreneur, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of a personal series showcasing causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly. Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Parent Company The recent development intensifies the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades. The co-founders have claimed that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission". Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and additional components. “I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.” This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white. Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank. This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return". Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions The founder revealed that he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever. The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism. At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it." "My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
