The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
