South African Forward Wessels Receives Nine-Game Suspension for Inappropriate Contact

Rugby player action

Wessels is ruled out for the Springboks' upcoming test matches.

Springbok prop Wessels faces a suspension of nine matches for touching Josh Murphy's private parts during the Bulls' URC win over the Irish province.

This event occurred in the 18th minute of the narrow victory against Connacht on last Friday, with Connacht forward Murphy receiving a temporary dismissal after responding aggressively by hitting Wessels on the head area.

Following the Connacht player complained to referee Mike Adamson, the situation was reviewed by the television match official, who found insufficient clear footage.

The Bulls player stayed on the pitch until he was substituted in the second half of the game.

While the URC announced that the Irish player's temporary sending-off was overturned by a disciplinary panel, the Springbok was found to have breached law 9.27, which states:

"A player should not engage in actions that is contrary to the principles of fair play. Such behavior covers touching, twisting or compressing the private areas."

Disciplinary officials were satisfied that the contact reached the level for dismissal and warranted a three-month ban, the minimum suspension under international rugby regulations for such an violation.

However, the player's suspension was reduced by 21 days because of his cooperative behavior prior to and at the proceedings and his good record.

Wessels and the Bulls have the right to challenge the decision, but currently, the suspension will rule the 24-year-old out of the Springboks' autumn Tests against the Brave Blossoms, France, the Azzurri and Ireland.

He will also miss the his club's URC games against Warriors, the Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup fixtures with Bordeaux and Northampton.

The prop has earned ten international appearances for the Springboks and was included in their tri-nations champion team during the recent tournament.

Murphy, in contrast, is eligible to play against the Irish rivals in this weekend's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
