Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
