International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Captives in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza currently controlled by IDF control to facilitate the search for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on October 10, Hamas is required to hand over the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far handed back the remains of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the yellow line marking the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the Red Cross joined a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a representative for the organization.

She added: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the procedures of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official additionally clarified: “Our team was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

When the 48-hour deadline approached, Hamas, joined by the ICRC, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for bodies past the boundary indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. However, the effort to find the remains has been challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an estimated 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, as per health officials, at least ten thousand Palestinians are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Remains Whereabouts

Hamas has stated it lacks information on the precise locations of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were allegedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization knew the locations of the remains. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the US president has acknowledged that a portion of the remains are hard to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over now and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“This could be related to the surrender of weapons of the group,” he added.
