Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
