Congress Passes Measure to Make Public Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will force the release of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

The public have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. Trump signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he expressed his backing for the legislation over the past few days, and announced he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with victims and their advocates who were watching from a public section, cheered after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
