Colombia's President Says 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' if US Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing tensions in their relations following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric and Accusations

Addressing reporters on Sunday, the US president threatened similar armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming Colombia faces serious problems and governed by a sick man involved in producing the drug and selling it to America."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Strained Alliance

The country for decades served as a close partner of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have worsened dramatically since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by illegal armed groups such as one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms after a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Response

Upon being questioned whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed decades ago, rejected Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And if they detain the president, whom many of Colombians loves and respects, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing a new constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning the presidency.

"I made a vow to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that Petro's personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the notion of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

American authorities revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged US troops to ignore any illegal orders. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and a number of close collaborators.

Concurrently while America bolstered its troop levels near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations against vessels in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
